ChatGPT's navigation rail is gone: how to find your place in long chats
Updated October 9, 2026 · By Otter Potter, the maker of Prompt Rail (not neutral; we say where it matters).
In long chats, ChatGPT used to show a thin rail on the right edge of the page: one mark per prompt, a preview when you hovered, a jump when you clicked. Around August 21, 2026 it disappeared without an announcement, and people noticed the same day. In late September users also reported keyboard navigation broken. There's no setting to bring the rail back. Here's what still works.
1. Find in page (free)
Press Ctrl+F (⌘+F on a Mac) and type a word you remember from the prompt. It's built into every browser. The catch: you need to remember a word, and in a long chat the same word shows up dozens of times in the answers too.
2. Ask ChatGPT for a table of contents (free)
Ask: "List every question I've asked in this chat, numbered, one line each." You get an outline you can scan, though not one you can click, and it adds another long answer to an already long chat.
3. Start a fresh chat
When a chat gets so long that finding your place is the problem, it's often also slowing down and losing track of early details. Ask for a summary of the decisions so far, paste it into a new chat, and carry on there. (Our Carry On extension does this in one click; the manual way works fine.)
4. A navigator extension
Several all-in-one ChatGPT toolkits include a prompt navigator among many other features. If you want only the rail, Prompt Rail (we make this) puts it back: a mark for every prompt on the right edge, a preview on hover, a jump on click, Alt+↑ and Alt+↓ to move between prompts, and a ☆ to bookmark the ones you'll want again. Bookmarks stay in your browser, and the toolbar button lists them across chats. It's free.
What it can't do: it works on chatgpt.com in a desktop browser, not in the ChatGPT apps, and if ChatGPT changes its page it may need an update.
Questions

- Were my chats changed?
- No. Only the rail is gone; every message is still there.
- Is Prompt Rail made by OpenAI?
- No. It's made by Otter Potter and is not affiliated with OpenAI.
