Side Canvas for ChatGPT. Last updated October 6, 2026.
Side Canvas for ChatGPT ("the extension") is a document editor in your browser's side panel that can ask ChatGPT, in your own chatgpt.com tab, to edit the text you choose. We do not run servers, we do not use analytics or tracking, and we never sell data. We never receive your documents or conversations.
What the extension reads
The extension runs only on chatgpt.com. When you click "Open in Side Canvas" under an answer, or ask for an edit, it reads that conversation from ChatGPT, the same data the ChatGPT page itself loads, using your existing ChatGPT sign-in. It uses it only to open the answer as a document or to read ChatGPT's reply to your request.
What the extension sends
Only when you ask for an edit, it types your request (your instruction and the text you chose, plus the document for context) into ChatGPT's message box in your own tab and sends it, exactly as if you had typed it. That message is handled by OpenAI under your ChatGPT account and OpenAI's own policies. The extension sends nothing anywhere else.
What the extension stores
Your documents, their version history, how many edits you've used today, and whether you have Pro, in your browser's extension storage on this computer. It is not synced and never leaves your computer. Removing the extension deletes it.
Payments
Pro is sold through ExtensionPay, with payments processed by Stripe on their own pages. They collect your email and payment details to process the purchase; the extension never sees your card details.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent or share any data, and we do not use it for advertising.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
