ChatGPT says you’ve reached the maximum length for this conversation: how to continue

Updated October 10, 2026 · By Otter Potter, the maker of Carry On (not neutral; we say where it matters).

You’re deep in a project and ChatGPT stops with “You’ve reached the maximum length for this conversation, but you can keep talking by starting a new chat.” The new chat knows nothing about the work so far. People have been asking how you’re actually meant to continue, and since September 2026 several report hitting the limit much sooner than before. Here are the ways through, free ones first.

What the message means

Every chat has a ceiling on how much text it can hold: your messages, the answers, and any files. When it’s full, the chat can’t take another message. Nothing is deleted. You can still read and copy everything in it. OpenAI doesn’t publish the exact ceiling, and it isn’t a fixed number of messages: long answers, pasted documents and code fill it faster.

1. Ask for a handoff before the chat is full (free)

The best moment is when ChatGPT warns that the chat is “nearing its limit”, or when a long chat starts getting slow and forgetful. Send this, then paste the answer as the first message of a new chat:

Write a handoff for a new chat that knows nothing about this one. Include: the goal; decisions we made and why; the current state of the work; open questions; and the exact latest version of any code or text we were working on. Be complete but brief.

The catch: it only works while the chat still accepts messages.

2. If the chat is already full (free)

You can’t send anything more, so build the handoff by hand. Scroll back and copy the latest version of whatever you were making (the code, the draft, the plan), plus your own last few messages. In a new chat, paste them and start with one line that says what you’re doing: “I’m continuing a project. Here is where it stands.” It takes a few minutes and you’ll miss some of the early decisions, but it gets you moving.

3. Keep the lasting parts in a Project (free)

If the work will run for weeks, put it in a ChatGPT Project. Instructions and files you add to a Project are available to every chat inside it, so a new chat starts with the background already there. You still need a short handoff for “where we got to”, but not for “what this is”.

4. An extension that carries it over

Carry On for ChatGPT (we make this) builds the handoff from the chat on your screen, including one that is already full: the goal, your recent messages, and the latest code, into a new chat in one click. It reads the page in your browser and sends nothing to us.

What it can’t do: it works on chatgpt.com in a desktop browser, not in the phone apps, and it carries over what’s in the chat, not files you uploaded.

Questions

Did I lose my conversation?
No. A full chat stays in your history and you can read and copy it. It just can’t take new messages.
Does paying remove the limit?
Not as far as users report: the threads linked above include Plus subscribers. OpenAI doesn’t publish the numbers, so we can’t say how plans differ.
Why does it happen sooner now?
Nobody outside OpenAI knows. Reports of chats filling up faster began in September 2026 and OpenAI hasn’t explained them.
Is Carry On made by OpenAI?
No. It’s made by Otter Potter and is not affiliated with OpenAI.
