Taproot Tabs. Last updated October 1, 2026 (saved workspaces added).
Taproot Tabs ("the extension") shows your open tabs as a tree in Chrome's side panel. It is built to collect as little as possible. Everything it keeps stays in your own browser. We do not run servers that store your data, we do not use analytics or tracking, and we never sell data.
What the extension reads
To draw the tree, the extension reads the title, address (URL) and icon of the tabs open in your Chrome windows, and which tab each new tab was opened from. Because of this, Chrome describes the extension as able to "read your browsing history." It does not read the contents of the pages you visit, and it does not read your saved browsing history.
What the extension stores
- The tree: which tab sits under which, whether a branch is collapsed, and any tab colors you set. This is kept in Chrome's temporary session storage and is cleared when Chrome quits.
- Restart snapshots: so your trees come back after Chrome restarts, the extension saves the addresses of the tabs in each window, how they were nested, and which branches were collapsed or colored, for up to the 10 most recent windows. These are kept in Chrome's local storage on your computer only. They are not synced.
- Saved workspaces (if you save any): the name you give each workspace and the addresses of its tabs, with how they were nested, collapsed or colored. Kept in Chrome's local storage on your computer until you delete the workspace or uninstall. Not synced.
- Settings: your theme and whether you have Pro.
All of this lives in your browser (chrome.storage). We (the developer) cannot see it.
Site icons
To show each tab's icon, the panel loads the same icon image Chrome already shows for that tab, usually straight from Chrome's cache. No other requests are made to the sites you visit.
Payments (Pro)
Pro upgrades are handled by ExtensionPay, and card payments are processed by Stripe. When you buy Pro or log in to restore it, you give your email address and payment details to them, not to us. The extension checks with ExtensionPay whether you have paid, using a random identifier it creates on install. Your tabs and tree are never sent to ExtensionPay. See ExtensionPay and the Stripe privacy policy for how they handle your information. We receive your email address and purchase record so we can help with refunds and support.
Sharing
We do not sell, rent or share your data with anyone, and we do not use it for advertising. Apart from the Pro check above, the extension does not send anything over the network.
Chrome Web Store Limited Use
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Deleting your data
Uninstalling the extension removes everything it stores in your browser, including restart snapshots. To delete your payment record, contact us at the address below.
Children
The extension is not directed at children under 13.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date.
