How to bill partial hours on Square invoices
Updated October 5, 2026 · By Otter Potter, the maker of Timecomb for Square Invoices (not neutral; we say where it matters).
Type "1.5" into the quantity of a one-time item on a Square invoice and it turns into 1. One-time items only take whole numbers, which is a problem if you bill by the hour and worked an hour and a half. Square also has no timer or hour log, so the hours come from somewhere else and get retyped. Here are the three ways around it.
1. A library item with an Hour unit
Square's own fix. In Items, create an item (say "Consulting"), set its unit to Hour with decimal precision, and price it at your hourly rate. On an invoice, that item takes quantities like 1.75. It works well for one or two fixed rates. The catch: every rate needs its own library item, and the line shows the item's name, so the task and date go in the item note by hand.
2. Quarter-hour items
The older workaround: one item per fraction ("15 minutes", "30 minutes", "45 minutes") at each rate, added next to the whole hours. It adds up correctly but makes long invoices, and every item needs updating when your rate changes.
3. Timecomb for Square Invoices (we make this)
Timecomb for Square Invoices is a browser extension that does the tracking and the invoice lines. There's a Start timer button on each customer in your Square customer directory, and Add unbilled hours in the invoice editor. Whole hours go on as quantity × rate. Partial hours go on as one line at the exact total, so 2.25 hours at $80 is one $180.00 line, and the item note your customer sees says "2.25 h at 80.00/h" and the date. Nothing is added to your item library, and you save and send the invoice yourself. It reads only the customer's name and company and the invoice form, never payments, cards or payouts, and keeps your hours in your browser. Free for one open project; Pro, which adds the invoice button, is $19 once.
