ChatGPT memory full? How to see what it remembers and keep what matters
Updated October 10, 2026 · By Otter Potter, the maker of Memory Keeper (not neutral; we say where it matters).
ChatGPT can remember things about you between chats: your job, your projects, how you like answers. That memory has a ceiling. People have asked OpenAI to raise it for more than two years, in a thread titled “mine is constantly full” that has passed a hundred posts, and others report ChatGPT recalling a memory and then not using it. Here is how to see what’s in there and look after it.
1. Look at what it has saved (free)
In ChatGPT, open Settings, then Personalization, and find Memory. Manage shows the saved memories and how full the space is. Read through them once: most people find things that are out of date or were never worth keeping.
2. Clear space on purpose (free)
In the same place, delete the memories you don’t need. Do it one at a time and avoid “clear all” unless you mean it, because a deleted memory can’t be brought back. Trivia from a one-off chat goes first; things about your work and preferences stay.
3. Move the important ones somewhere permanent (free)
Memory is the wrong place for anything you can’t afford to lose. Put the essentials (who you are, what you do, how you like answers) into custom instructions, which don’t fill up and don’t change unless you change them. Keep a copy in a note as well, so it can go with you to another AI.
4. See it all at once, and what changed
Memory Keeper for ChatGPT (we make this, it’s free) shows every saved memory in one searchable list, how full the space is, and what is new, changed or gone since you last looked. It keeps a copy of the ones that disappeared so you can paste them back, and saves the whole list as a file. It only reads: it never adds, edits or deletes a memory.
What it can’t do: it reads saved memories, not what ChatGPT picks up from your chat history. It needs a chatgpt.com tab open in a desktop browser, and it can’t restore a memory for you; it gives you the text to paste back.

- OpenAI has changed how memory works more than once and doesn’t publish a simple number, so check the Memory screen in your own account.
- How do I make ChatGPT remember something?
- Tell it: “Remember that I’m vegetarian.” It should confirm that memory was updated. Check the Memory screen if it matters.
- Is Memory Keeper made by OpenAI?
- No. It’s made by Otter Potter and is not affiliated with OpenAI.
